Baldwin began as Hick's Neck, was later called Milburn, and took its name from local storekeeper Thomas Baldwin in the 1800s. The town grew around the railroad station and Grand Avenue, and most of its houses went up between the 1920s and the 1960s.
That history shows up in the garages. We work on Cape Cods with narrow single doors, colonials with detached garages at the end of a long driveway, and split-levels where a bedroom sits right above the opener. Older framing often means low headroom and out-of-square openings, so a door that "just needs a spring" sometimes needs a careful re-hang too.
South of Merrick Road and down toward Baldwin Harbor, salt air off Middle Bay wears on springs, rollers and bottom seals faster than it does north of Sunrise Highway. Homes that took water during Sandy taught us to check opener wiring and outlets low on the wall, and to suggest galvanized hardware when parts get replaced.
Is it safe to use a garage door with a broken spring?
No. When a spring breaks, the door's full weight falls on the opener and the cables. A typical two-car steel door weighs 150 to 250 pounds. Running the opener can strip its gear or snap a cable and drop the door. Leave it closed and let a technician release the tension properly.
